I don't like it. It'd really split players apart and many people would be reluctant to join games in our small community.

Classic mode is especially bad, as it rolls back many brilliant upgrades like troop movement that works according to your specifications for it.

Perhaps in the future. But not with all these modes you proposed as players would come and go if they didn't like your set-up in a public game.

I'd love for this game to be more like Paradox Interactive's games.
I'd highly recommend them to any fan of Afterwind... they are basically a deeper version of Afterwind, in short!

Victoria 2 could be a model for this. You basically have competing political factions you must keep under check. Too much mobilisation of troops? General dissent. Too much taxation? Burghers and then REDS when communism is invented!
Be afraid, be very afraid!
EDIT:Not to mention that the game is a simulation of trade in the 19th century and early 20th century in itself! How could I forget that? You even have to BUY FOOD for your troops for heaven's sake!

Yeah, this should only be a scenario feature.
One of the main reasons I was attracted to Afterwind is because I don't like sci-fi and fantasy strategy games, after all. I like its relative realism--hence why I have only played strategy games like Rise of Nations however "good" or "fun" Starcraft and stuff may be.

BUT KEEP IT REAL, HOMEYZ.

In that case, add Malta, too! Malta has a population of ~400,000 while Greenland only has something like 50,000 citizens!

Malta is not too strategic, I suppose though. But if you're going to add Greenland, you should add Malta, too, that's the important thing!!!

Hell, even Luxembourg is in the game and that has ~500,000 citizens! Surely it's time for Malta to enter the game!

Its actually the only and first distrubution i'm running and it's really easy to begin with... I know a bit of programming (C++) and I had no big problems... It just took a bit of time to set my sound up cause my soundcard wasn't really compatible but I fixed it now.
About the terminal:
I'm hardly forced to use it. All the common applications/Programms are easy to install! If you can get to use to the terminal do! It helps you a lot cause when you need help you have to know at least to handle and understand what they say in forums. So some basics wouldn't be bad. But anyway reading helps read as much as you can!
I think the most common versions are ubuntu and suse! so rather pick one of those cause they are mostly written about in forums... If i may change again if may be ubuntu

Hehe, we went way off-topic there but I got what I wanted--thanks mods!
I don't like Ubuntu because it's made by Canonical, a capitalistic corporation that disgusts me. Red Hat is not much better, but at least they associate themselves more with the community and other Linux distributions, while Canonical contributes almost nothing to the Linux kernel, as I read in an article the other day. That's why I chose Linux Mint!

But yeah, I have a pretty good understanding of systems overall but I understand Unix-based systems (like Linux) are a radical departure from ol' Windows. I'll probably try SuSE as I like its selection of software more, and it has rolling releases now, apparently (to an extent). I also no longer wish to support GNOME, GNOME 3's developers reaaaaally lost the plot I think! What's their problem?! Bah, I hate GNOME now, KDE strong! So yeah, SuSE for me I guess. Thanks for your insight. :3

I've only watched 3 anime series and they're all of the "more serious" type (no yaoi, etc), but Code Geass R1 + R2 is my favourite. And watch R1 before R2, it's much better this way.
Made me cry 3 times over the series and it left me depressed for a while, I must say!

Im running Linux (suse) and got problems with moonlight can anybody help? Anyone fixed this?

Hey, the English Wikipedia page for Moonlight, the Linux implementation of Silverlight is apparently going to support Silverlight 4 quite soon which is what Afterwind runs on!

But yeah, you're stuck on Windows for now! ;__;
I've been looking for a Linux distribution myself these days, and after having looked at a LOT of distributions, I've narrowed it down to the three that interest me most; Linux Mint (first choice), openSuSE (second choice, mainly for being RPM-based) and Pardus, a bit of an oddball that looks to be incredible and going to explode soon, but it has a weird installer format.

What would you recommend? Is SuSE good for a beginner at Linux who's has a lot of experience with Windows and is up to God-tier level without being a programmer? I really would want to avoid using the Terminal/Bash/Command Line. What distribution would YOU recommend?

But Italy is truly disadvantaged. Someone playing as Portugal with Naval Commander will have utterly smashed you by week 10.

Week 10? you could hit italy by week 3-4 if you get spain and barcelona.

Sure, but don't forget Rome is not a port... and it will take one a few more weeks to get to that because Spain doesn't have huge troop numbers.

But still, Italy will definitely be gone from the game by week 10. Even if Portugal's in the hands of the greatest of noobs.

Germany is in a pretty good position as you have a nice shell of cities and small countries around you to protect you... and a huge population and wad of cash (access to the Scandinavian countries, remember?) to go with that!

But Italy is truly disadvantaged. Someone playing as Portugal with Naval Commander will have utterly smashed you by week 10. However, Greece, Turkey and countries in the Balkans are never huge threats for Italy, it's mainly France and Portugal/Spain but they are so dangerous that you could compare it to fighting on two fronts..

I think the U.S. is too far spread and not many people like to play America games because of that. MY suggestion is that you redesign it and give it all 50 states...or at least most of them. Then it will be even more enjoyable than Europe games and will allow for alot more players to participate

That would there would be no sea and that everyone would use marines. Some states are really close together and would allow for very fast expansion. All in all, a stupid idea both Ivan and Amok have considered impossible with the current mapping system.

I completely disagree with this idea.
Saging is made for the culture of chans. THAT culture is incompatible with that of an internet forum, particularly in more serious ones like this. If you don't like something, respectfully disagree while giving a reason or simply don't post.

You don't have to rage about it. You don't have to post goatse in protest. Just ignore them or report them to the mods if that's the appropriate action to take. Such things should not exist on internet forums. It would destroy it and flame wars would start up everywhere, which is the last thing anyone work.

Back on the topic, I'm afraid that after watching various back-and-forth discussions between coalition members, the coalition being dissolved is a real possibility. A community of BOYS WHO DON'T ABIDE BY THE RULES such as that of /int/ or any *chan board except /tg/, which is no overstatement, can be organised and effective. It was never intended to be a "true coalition" anyway--more of a hub for Bernds to gather in.

So... until things get organised, there shall be no more little adventures for /int/.
On behalf of all Bernds, I'm sorry.

Oh, and if I may say, can you move the "Bugs" sub-category to the top of the "Afterwind forums" category? It is easily the most important category there is to game development but most players are unaware of and think the "General discussion" is where you talk about bugs because the "Bugs" category is placed so low!

Please move it up to the top, for the good of Afterwind!

I've been having this problem in the last 3 days or so where in a few turns of a game, with no particular correlation of when this happens--no move orders are actually sent and I actually do nothing in the whole round. I don't recruit anything, either, but everyone else happens to move.

Basically, I make no changes from my side whatsoever as if I'm AFK but everyone else proceeds with the game normally.

This has happened very irregularly but in all games I've played over the past 3 days or so. By this I mean the 2nd, 3rd or WHATEVER week of the game may not have my orders sent in and in the same game this can happen right at the end of the 40th week--in really random times overall.

Even if I click "end turn" very early, I still see my name in the people the game is waiting for to finish presumably because my orders haven't been sent in and therefore, this is not a valid solution.

This is a clearly game-ruining bug. Please fix it.

Note: If you look through the site logs, you may have noticed I browse with Opera. Well, I asked a few more players about this bug and quite a few have had it before, as it seems, albeit in the Firefox browser.

I know I'm a bit late to this thread, but I strongly believe Abkhazia and South Ossetia should not be added.

Only countries with a plentiful amount of recognition, like Kosovo should be added. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Nagorno-Karabakh are both recognised only by their creators, etc. Southern Sudan, on the other hand, has had the support of foreign countries to become a separate state for a long while now. So kindly leave out Abkhazia and whatnot.

19.04.2011 у Silverlight 5
Silverlight 5 beta has recently been released, and it looks like while Silverlight will not stop being developed by Microsoft--it is taking a turn for it to intergrate better with Windows and being more gaming-focused, which is just what Afterwind developers would want!

A headlining feature is hardware acceleration of 3D graphics, which could be a stepping stone to solving this much-protested-about issue. A number of modules have been put into Silverlight from XNA to make it more versatile in developing awesome games like Afterwind.

Here's a more in-depth look at the new features.
As it states in the article, Silverlight 5 is "a worthwhile but not revolutionary upgrade."

I'm sure, you, Ivan and Amok, are well aware of this release, but what do you think? Is there a new feature you're excited about in this release?

Don't forget, Moonlight will soon be upgrading to work with Silverlight 4 and a lot of ground has been covered already. You wouldn't want to break such compatibility for a few throwaway features in Silverlight 5, so choose wisely.

I generally listen to this type of music very little, but when playing Afterwind, I'm usually listening to hard rock, the type bands such as the legendary AC/DC are best known for.

Nothing like that feeling when you make a successful attack on your enemy's capital and then the chorus kicks in.

If I may say, I think it's a good idea.

Ivan's and Amok's choice (a) takes nothing away from the game and (b) is something a lot of committed players who joined after the beta phase may want.

Apart from forbidding the creation of private games--which is how I invited my brother to the game, for example--I think all of the stuff you need to pay for is "wanted" enough but still not quite enough as to break the game for newer, non-paying members.

It's quite fair, wouldn't you agree? Just try to see it from poor Ivan's and Amok's perspectives. They came from poor Estonia and had to emigrate to all over Europe and they get this kind of backlash for making one of the most highly original (and greatly enjoyable) strategy games on the internet? Shame on you, Fruitcommando, you shouldn't say things like that, I really feel for the two guys.

You've been looking for a way to monetise Afterwind for a while, haven't you?

How about adding a donation button on the home page for those who already have every upgrade--which I assume to be at least 95% of your player base?

I understand donations do not pull a great many people in and often little money from those that are pulled in, but it is still important that you make some money for your great work and an additional yet harmless way of making money from the game would be nice.

Just add a Flattr (or something) button in a clearly visible position on the home page--that is, not at the bottom of the page--for accepting donations.

I wrote this in a thread a little while ago but it gained almost no attention, so I'd like to raise the issue again. I don't hate Comic Sans, I just think the game would do better with the font I've proposed instead and I'm sure many will agree with me, including anyone who's watched a Bond or any spy/political thriller/action film involving bombs about to blow, etcetera. Without further ado, the post:

[sic] may I kindly request the timer that counts down the time towards the end of a week has its font changed?

I'd like to recommend against the use of Comic Sans in such an... intense game. A digital clock display would suit the overall graphical theme of the game much more!
An example of a digital clock display is shown below if you don't know what one is!

20.03.2011 у India.
It's always a huge pain in the backside to conquer India. This goes for both the first conqueror, and the second person who wants to defeat this conqueror.

This greatly unbalances the game. An enormous force is required when attacking from either side against a fully united India, due to the sheer number of troops available to its owner.

  • The west will be heavily fortified, likely covered by defence lines. It's only common sense for the player to do this.
  • The east is a long distance with lots of exposure due to the low number of cities there
  • The south is way, way too much of a distance. Due to human nature, the player will undoubtedly want to conquer a few cities first, but no amount of rare units can save someone attacking the capital from the south-west (the horn of Africa and Arabian peninsula) or south-east (Sri Lanka).

It's awfully unbalanced at the moment. I'd like a three-fold split, perhaps not the same split as the one shown in the map above, but a split nevertheless would be greatly beneficial to the game's fairness.
And due to the above reasons for difficulty in invading India, there can never be a rally to conquer India or anything of the sort. It will always be Bangladesh or a country to the north of India that takes over. No hope for everyone else in the region. This is yet another reason to split India. It should not be a major bargaining chip simply based on location (which is very unfair). It should be just another area. So please split up India.
