It's called strong genetics, persistent and unique culture and being smarter and less of a bitch than the Castillians xd Also If Spain could conquer us, they'd have done it in the past, they only did it once and purely because of a retarded decision by King Sebastião of Portugal and entangling marriage lines that made the King of Spain the strongest contestant to the throne. As simple as that. Read about the Battle of Aljubarrota or Atoleiros or Vilaverde and you'll see their military inferiority XD

>strong genetics Have to answer this... Please, Portugal was free to roam the world only because Spain ignored it, if Spain cought an eye of portuguese territory, you would be spanish province today. And after centuries of mixing, you would not be different than Bavaria and Prussia,or England and Scotland. Spain sent recreation parties for easy training, and you call that victories. Another thing is, you are in the down corner of Europe, avoiding all wars and calamities. If you were in central europe like Poland, you would be erased from the map more time than word on the paper.

In Portugal we have an expression for what you just said: What does the ass has to do with the pants? Basically: What relation does it have what you said with what I said under its context?

You literally proved my point. Our genetics, cultural and national characteristics as a people have been shaped by various socio-political and economic factors that made the Portuguese Nation (Nation is not the same as State) one of a kind and unique, severely different from the Spanish Kingdom and its integrant-nations. The fact you called those battles and other battles between Portugal and Spain (or Léon and Castille) proves your ignorancy regarding the subject and the context around the battles. Those 3 battles, especially the Aljubarrota battles, were fought between a disorganized Portuguese armed forces and ill-armed and strong-elite troops from Castille aided by French weaponry or cavalry (like the Aljubarrota one). I will not choose to talk about the battles of Atoleiros and Vilaverde because they were military brilliancy by the Portuguese at its finest, against an over-confident and ill-knowing of the terrain that characterized the Castillians throughout centuries, being one of the many negative traits the Spanish nations share. The battle of Aljubarrota was not a recreation military party for easy training by the Castillians. The battle of Aljubarrota was a decisive military battle between the full rush-formed might of the weak Portuguese kindgom's forces aided by a couple of english archers against a full mighty army of Franco-Castillian buildup, made up of elite castillian troops and elite french cavalry. The battle of Aljubarrota is one of the many military brilliancies the Portuguese Army did during its long history (we have one of the oldest Armed Forces in the entire world) and we won that battle for our Nation's survival against a foreign oppressor (John of Castille) who threw full waves of soldiers in invasions of Portugal and sieges, like the Lisbon one that failed due to disease and military inability. That battle basically was won because we skillfully used the terrain and we used innovative square formations at the time that were object of study for centuries in Military Academies and is still a matter of Study today, as far as I am aware. I suggest you to give a read about the battle, it's truly remarkable. Suggest reading about our Constable, Álvares Pereira, a military genius. Also your other first sentence about we were given free passage through the world due to Spain ignoring it is not true. It was in the Peninsula's interest and the interest of both crowns to pursue the colonial expansion in the name of the Catholic faith and to lay a stance in a Europe crippled by the 100 years war and Nationalistic differences and in face of a rising Muslim east. Not only what you said was strongly wrong because of that but because if you were aware you'd know Portugal and Spain had signed a treaty dividing the world into 2 in 1494 (If im not mistaken), the Tordesillas treaty, which is today the reason why California and large portions of US and America are spanish-speaking, despite being the Portuguese the ones to discover California and to step on it first.
