10 days Russia bombing ISIS

20 years since USSR collapse, 20 years of Russia's neutrality in geopolitics and now intervention in Middle East. Many geopolitical experts believe this is a turning point in history where unipolar American-led world is over and new multipolar world started to create.










Aircrafts Russia is using:


Su-25 is Russian Air Force work horse, introduced in early 1980s. The jet was designed for close air support - that is, to directly help ground forces engage the enemy. The final phases of its trials included real combat missions in Afghanistan. This 'baptism by fire' proved quite useful, as feedback from the military was used to increase the plane's survivability, which was already very high as dictated by its purpose. By the time the design was finalized, Su-25 had seven years of serial production behind it.





The Su-24 is a tactical bomber meant to fly below the radar and hit ground targets from low altitudes. The military wanted the plane to have short take-off and landing capabilities to so that it could be used on small airfields. An early prototype had four turbojet engines that complemented two main engines during take-off. The scheme, however, proved to be very inefficient, so instead designers gave it variable-sweep wings. The plane first entered service in the early 1970s. A decade later a better variant called Su-24M with a different radar and targeting equipment needed for more precise weapons was introduced. This model is the backbone of Russia's tactical bomber. Sukhoi continues upgrading the aircraft.





The Su-34 is a strike fighter and the most modern aircraft to take part in Russia's operation against Islamic State in Syria.
Its development began in the mid-'80s as a replacement for the Su-24, with the country's military receiving the first batch of new warplanes in 2006. The jet is designed for the supersonic penetration of enemy airspace at treetop level in the most severe weather and battle conditions. The two-pilot strike fighter is sometimes referred to as 'a flying tank' due to an armored cockpit and efficient standoff weapons, which enable it to survive not only missile fragments, but even direct hits from small caliber arms.








Smart bombs Russia is using against ISIS:














Russia's smart weapon inventory used in Syria is a choice of time-proven bombs and missiles equipped with state-of-the-art system guidance. Precision weapons are used from high altitudes to exclude encounters with portable air-defense systems. Russian precision bombs use the GLONASS navigation system to home in on targets, while missiles are expertly guided by the weapon system operator.

A trusty weapon in the surgical strikes being carried out in Syria is the KAB guided bomb, which has two variants: KAB-250 and KAB-500. The KAB-250 guided bomb was developed in the 2000s specifically for the 5G PAK-FA fighter jet, where it is mounted in inside bays, which explains its distinctive egg-shaped form. The bomb can also be used by other modern Russian fighter jets, such as the Sukhoi Su-34 bomber, which drops these weapons on Islamic State targets in Syria from an altitude of 5,000 meters. Laser-guided missiles in Syria differ in ammunition power and are reportedly laser guided versions of the Kh-25L and Kh-29L.

Sukhoi Su-24 and Su-25 ground-support fighters also use non-guided air bombs. A sophisticated targeting system allows pilots to plant bombs with lethal accuracy. Islamic State command centers are multilevel underground bunkers made of reinforced concrete, so it takes a special bunker-busting BETAB-500 air bomb to knock them out. Once a concrete-piercing BETAB-500 accelerated by its jet booster breaks in and explodes, any underground installation is completely destroyed. Fragmentation demolition OFAB-250 air bombs have also been spotted under the wings of Sukhoi fighter jets at the Khmeimim airbase. These munitions are used to eliminate unprotected targets, such terrorist training camps and arms depots.

Modern Russia has never conducted any military operations far from its borders and the scene of operations in Syria is hundreds of kilometers away from Russia's nearest military base. There are hundreds of servicemen and pilots at Khmeimim airbase and providing convenience for them far from home, as imminent danger from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) looms just 40 kilometers away, is a challenge for the supply service.

The infrastructure needed to sustain the military operation in Syria had to be developed from a scratch. When Russia allotted land near the Khmeimim airfield it was flat and empty. Everything at the Russian stronghold in Latakia had to be brought from Russia. All personnel and servicemen are fed one menu from field kitchens. The food is simple, yet nutritious. All ingredients are brought from Russia by sea or airlifted. To keep up troops' morale high far from home, the base even has a mobile Russian sauna. The sauna trucks have been brought all the way from Russia.











Russia also used fleet to support air operations. 26 cruise missiles have been fired from Caspian sea on ISIS supply and logistic targets.








I didn't believe i would live long enough to see Russia fight back. I thought it will stay on defensive for very long time until politics, economy and military is reformed (basically everything reformed in Russia). But it happened, after 20 years. Small in numbers, few planes and personnel, but high efficiency, as point is to accomplish mission, not to show strength.

You forget humans are half empty from inside, therefore lightweight (80kg average). This bomb is fully 'zipped' inside with iron and other metals, and therefore it is heavyweight.

That's correct, America admitted they didn't damage ISIS much and they grew stronger to 100,000 men and even developed their infrastructure for that year of American bombing. Russia is bombing ISIS 10 days and made 300 terrorists to surrender to Syria and damaged tens of terrorists depots, command centers, training centers and their barracks.

Now Syria started offensive against ISIS with 150,000 infantry, rested, fed and equipped by Russia. They captured few tactical positions already. Basically Russia is copying successful American operation from Yugoslav War where US Air Force bombed Serbian-Croatian Army weakening them while Croatian terrorists and rebels used 200,000 infantry to capture positions in 1995.

Never heard that, Turkey said it left airspace after few minutes and they accepted Russian apology because russian pilot made mistake entering turkish airspace. Of course that event gave idea to NATO to start bashing Russia and spam propaganda how they will answer with violence.

Kudos to the Russian Air Force and relevant officials for doing what needs to be done.

I'm no fan of Russia and its government (and I like Assad even less), but even a Russian-dominated Syria is just so, so much more preferable to a longer civil war, or worse - an ISIS-controlled Syria.

Missile has been dismantled (on picture it is visible rear-part only with engine and fuel) and you can see mechanic is observing inside to check if everything is ok before assembling rocket again when aircraft take off.
